THE NDIA has the following advice for younger NDIS participants living in and moving out of residential aged care.
Younger NDIS participants, aged under 65, have more choice and control over where and how they live.
In September 2020, the Australian Government released the Younger People in Residential Aged Care Strategy 2020-2025 (the YPIRAC Strategy).
The strategy is designed to support younger participants to learn more about the other home and living options available to them and support them while they make informed choices about where and how they live.
The NDIS says younger participants wanting to learn more about the other home and living options does not mean they will have to move out of residential aged care either.
“You can choose to explore the other home and living options available for you, and still choose to remain living in residential aged care.
“If you want to stay living in residential aged care, the NDIS will continue to support you through your NDIS plan,” the NDIS says.
Younger NDIS participants wanting to start exploring other home and living options can do so at any time by contacting their support coordinator or the NDIS.
“Your support coordinator will work together with you and the NDIS to provide you with information about the most suitable home and living options available to support your needs.”
Support coordinators will also work with younger NDIS participants who move out of residential aged care.
“Your support coordinator will work with you to help you explore and connect you with the most suitable home and living option, to help you move out of residential aged care with the right supports.”
The NDIS says it can take time to identify and source the right home and living option, depending on a participant’s needs and choices.
“Some home and living options will need to be built or have changes made, so you can live independently with the right supports.
“We will keep you informed about the progress of your home and living option so you are prepared and ready when it’s time to move.”
